Twelve to fifteen Moreno/Rangel Interns and Fellows are chosen
each legislative session for this Austin, Texas program. Students
are selected on the basis of their demonstrated potential
for leadership and their commitment to community and civic
involvement. Recruitment begins in the summer of even-numbered
years with applications due by October. Applicants must be
currently enrolled in, or have graduated within the last year
from, college or graduate-level study. Foundation Board members
review and score all applications. Participants must be twenty-one
years of age. Students receive college or graduate school
credit based on their institution’s policies and guidelines.
TUITION AND STIPEND POLICIES
As the Moreno/Rangel Program time commitment precludes outside
employment, the Mexican American Legislative Leadership Foundation
provides some financial support in the form of stipends. Stipends
are currently $1,250 per month, along with a $750 per month
salary from the member of the House sponsoring the student.
The House member’s payroll contribution makes students
eligible for state employee health insurance. There is no
tuition for this program; the Foundation relies entirely on
contributions and grants for the funding of its programs.
The Foundation’s admissions, programs, and stipends
are administered on an equal opportunity basis.
